the easter bunny has left the building.
Easter morning and im reminiscing about my own childhood memories of the annual rites of spring. Some things change and some stay the same. Although im not really a big advocate of playing up the whole "easter bunny" thing we did do a basket for the wolverine. That i cannot give up. Its too much fun to see his face light up when he comes into the living room and sees a basket full of fun. Somehow he just knows it is his without us even telling him...Ha!
So the basket is chock full of things. Plastic eggs full of cars and trucks. Elmo eggs filled with tiny box of raisins. New bubbles....spill proof (great for those of us whose children insist on trying to drink theirs). A Thomas the Train book. Dr Seuss Green Eggs and Ham book. A pail, shovel, and handrake to help mommy in our garden. (This garden is fictious and although talked about endlessly has yet to appear in our backyard). And a Thomas the Train backpack....to carry fun things around in.
The day was uneventful other then that. No easter egg coloring or hunting. No spring fancy clothes. No church. No gluttonous overpriced brunches. Just us. The grandparents left at lunch.
Easter in my mind will always include things like baskets brimming with chocolate and candy. Matching full length purple gingham checked dresses for me and my big sister. Coloring eggs. Hunting eggs. Grandparents. Church, church, church. Uncomfortable tights. Wizard of oz.
I remember one Easter getting a little ring in my basket. That was thrilling. And i remember the disappointment of the Easter i finally "outgrew" the bunny and awoke to no basket while my little brother found his filled to the brim. That one still stings. *Note to self....the wolverine will get an easter basket until he is at least 25.
The weekend was a good one with the grandparents. Lots of eating out. Lots of the wolverine chasing around my mom calling out "grandmother". Playing Rook with my folks and tim. And losing every game!!!!
Hope everyone is well.

For us, it was always the EASTER EGG HUNT! I LOVED those! We did them at home till I was probably way too old... but I remember going to one that was sponsored by WGNS radio in the Boro, held out on the grounds of the old Oaklands mansion. I remember all the eggs were hollow and had prizes in them (Money, candy, slips of paper with a prize written out, etc) and I found one that got me a free two liter coke! This was REALLY cool, as two liter plastic bottles had just been introduced, and in the days before these large tubs of sodas we get at resturants these days, Two liters was a crap load of coke! I have no idea why this sticks out in my memory so much, but it does...
I also remember one year when we had an easter egg hunt at school, and we all were supposed to bring colored eggs to hunt. Well, my Mom hadn't had time to color ours, so she just wrapped some hard boiled eggs up in tin foil and sent me packing to school. I was monumentally embarrassed, until at the end of the hunt, it turned out my Mom's eggs were a huge hit, cause the kids could unwrap them and eat em! (Which I thought was disgusting, as I have always hated hard boiled aggs, but hey...it all works out for the best!)
here's my random easter memory...since my parents didn't really get into candy or the easter bunny, they would get me one of those blown up soft plastic balls that the stores keep in those huge bins every year around easter time. being a naive child, i thought that was what everyone got for easter (i also thought they were called "easter balls")
my dad is keeping the tradition alive for chance and has gotten him an 'easter' ball for the past 2 years.
What, Tim?! You hate hard-boiled eggs?!
Sounds like you had a great day and weekend. We braved the cold today and did the traditional hunt at my parents house. My nieces and nephews are getting a little old for it, and Noah is really still too young for it...he didn't get it at all really, we had to point and say, look, get it. Maybe it will be more fun in a few more years.
