Alright nursing mothers here is your chance to let your voice be heard and make a difference in the future of nursing mothers in Kentucky.
Here is an update on the Nursing Bill and they need our SUPPORT...for all you moms that nurse in public this is especially important. Dont just take it for granted that you can whip out the boob anywhere and feed or comfort your child. If you do it enough you know that eventually you will get flack for it. We need to ensure a supportive environment for our new mommys to encourage them to nurse. We all know its what is best for our babies......and it makes it easier when you dont have to worry about getting harrassed when nursing in public. So send in those emails and phone calls.
Dear Supporter,
This morning Doraine Bailey and I joined Senator Buford to testify for our bill at the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting in Frankfort. We each talked about why we feel that this is an important issue not only for ourselves but also on behalf of this bill's supporters. The Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to send SB 106 to the Senate floor for a vote.
While this is our first big victory, our bill has a long way to go before becoming a law. Please call your senator to ask him/her to support this bill when it comes up for vote. There is no way of knowing when it will come up, so call or email soon.

it is important to me because __________. I'm asking for you to vote yes when it comes up for the vote."

1. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in support of this bill.

My comments to the Lexington Herald Leader on their website concerning the article ....
"Thank you Lexington Herald Leader for this informative and timely article. We need this legislation passed to protect and encourage young nursing mothers. I never thought my decision to nurse our now 14 month old son would turn into a political statement, but when someone trys to interfere with me meeting the needs of my child or comment on when, where, and how i should do that ....then i have no choice but to speak out. My husband and I support this legislation and we stand firm behind all nursing mothers and their inherent right to feed their child ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.
I encourage all of you mursing moms in Lexington and all over Kentucky to get out there and nurse those babies in public.....let people see you...nothing is more important to the health and well being of our children then to encourage breastfeeding. Dont be discreet....breastfeeding is nothing to be ashamed of. God bless all of you for following your instincts and doing what is best for your child. "

I wrote to our representatives in the state legislature. Sen. Buford is the one who sponsored the bill so I thanked him for that. I also wrote Rep. Damron encouraging him to support the bill when it gets to the house.
The only other things I've ever written our representatives about are environmental issues, so this is cool. :-)
Way to go Rachel! Every email helps. Our Senator emailed back saying he had voted for the bill. I will keep posting updates here. I know the bill now has to go to the House again.
